Shopping in Nevis
Nevis has plenty of handmade articles that tempt the prospective shopper. The most popular items must be the locally made fiery hot sauce, the handmade clay pottery items, and the sweet honey of Nevis. Nevis has hit upon an imaginative way to preserve traditional production methods, keeping them economically viable through craft co-operatives where local craftsmen group together and make traditional articles, trying to keep alive a sense of culture at the same time.

Newcastle Pottery
In a concrete building not far from the airport, local crafts persons make popular Nevis pottery from red clay. The clay is native to the island and completed works are fired outdoors on coconut shells. Most items are hand crafted sans a pottery wheel, and only one of the potters actually uses a wheel.
The artists make flowerpots, candleholders, bowls, and tiny replicas of churches. It's fascinating to see the process - the evolution and transformation from dirt in the ground to wonderful decorative pieces.
