Golden Rock Plantation Inn

Address: PO Box 493, Gingerland. , Gingerland

Golden Rock waits for you high up in the Nevis hills. This hundred-acre 18th century sugar estate is the result of decades of personal owner management and devoted staff. The estate’s garden courtyard, bordered by luxuriant bougainvillea and orchids, is the centre of life at Golden Rock.

People linger in the courtyard having a cool drink, between 5:30 and 6pm, or at afternoon tea, served between 3.30-5.00pm under the umbrellas, looking for the curious golden glow on the left side of the mountain just before the sun sets…and that’s what Golden Rock is named after.

You can be as quiet or as adventurous as you want. The inn also runs its own beach bar and restaurant only a 15 minute drive away. The inn is 1000 feet up which offers incredible ocean views and cool breezes. Many guests become personal friends and come back again and again. You may feel as if you have stepped back in time.

We look forward to helping you plan a very special stay on Nevis - for couples, singles and families alike. Guests can choose accommodation in either one of our intimate cottages or the converted stone tower of the sugar estate’s mill.

Golden Rock Estate is a sheer delight. The reward is a serene and enchanting refuge that sits in perfect harmony with the remarkable beauty of the island itself.

The proprietor, Pam Barry’s great-great-great-great grandfather built Golden Rock Estate from lava stone between 1801 and 1815. You can almost hear the crushing of the sugarcane when you enter the old buildings and feel what it was like when sugar was king.

Facilities & Services

Nestled in the foothills of Mount Nevis, Golden Rock Estate's one hundred acres offer plenty of room to wander undisturbed, with historical remnants providing a revealing look into its past. Well-marked nature trails into the surrounding rainforest begin and end at Golden Rock, meandering through cotton, mahoe and breadfruit growing in ravines, and along ridges with groups of mango trees and yellow prickle.

The Inn has developed 2 self-guided rainforest hikes for our guests. For the light-hearted traveller there is the 30 minute Nature Trail which gives botanical and medicinal lessons. The more adventurous traveller should try the 3 to 4 hour Rainforest Trail which is narrow in spots but breathtakingly beautiful. Many people enjoy telling us later about their challenges and adventures.

There is a relaxed feeling in the Long House where you will find the bar, dining room, reading room and a place to play scrabble, chess, backgammon and an ancient bumper pool table. Choosing books from the library, you will feel like a houseguest in someone’s home.

If you decide to play a game of tennis, you may want to dive in and cool off afterwards in our 50 foot spring fed pool. It was once the main cistern in the 1800’s. If only these walls could talk!

While you enjoy after dinner drinks and coffee in the barrel vaulted Long House, everyone gets involved in interesting conversations and making new friends. There are those who also take pleasure in stargazing, evening walks or a moonlight swim.
